When it feels wrong to do something right, something is wrong.

c0-Mr-McGregor-chasing-Peter-RabbitWriters work differently.

My preferred method is to write, review, wait 24 hours, review again, get it peered, review, revise, submit.

It's still work, it just needs time to be done well.

Lots of things are that way: Paint has to dry. Soufflés have to rise. Wine must ferment.

We do rush of course, we have no choice, and normally the compromise in quality goes unnoticed and unmeasured.

As a colleague said to to me recently, when we actually get time to do our best work, we feel guilty, because we’re not rushing pell-mell like Peter Rabbit through Mr McGregor's garden.

When it feels wrong to do something right, something is wrong.

My Grandma Cairns used to read Peter Rabbit to me when I was very little. I remember being horrified that Mrs McGregor would bake a bunny rabbit into a pie. At least, she did in the version I heard.

"Science popularizer and TV personality Bill Nye is headed to Kentucky to advocate for the theory of evolution in a debate against Ken Ham." (Story  on Mashable >)

The debate will be Feb 14, 2014 at the Creation Museum.

Clarence comments:
Crazy Christians don't discredit Christianity any more than crazy doctors discredit medicine, but they do reflect poorly on it, and for the record, I'm rooting for Bill Nye in this debate.

dys-sex-lic (and God on Judgment Day)

c0-The-residents-of-Dogpatch-from-Al-Capp's-Li'l-AbnerOverheard a long, long time ago: “I just can’t talk to purty gurls. I must be dys-sex-lic.”

Why is that funny? He was serious. He thought that was a real word.

c0-Judgement-Day-cartoon-by-David-Coverly-from-speedbump-dot-comI’m not an artist, but if I were, I would draw this cartoon:

God on Judgment Day standing at the head of a long line with a microphone in his hand, and he says to me: “I’m sorry, Clarence, that's the wrong answer, but thanks for playing. Rod, tell Clarence what he’s won.”

Billy Squier, a carton of cigs and the open road.

c0 Billy Squier album cover, 'Don't Say No'In an earlier post (Dark Night of the Scarecrow: My Brother's Pizza & Calvin College, 1981 >), I mentioned Bill, who roomed with Pete Gordon, my pre-sem friend at Calvin College in 1981.

I admired Bill, and he needed admiration, so the relationship had a brief hero-acolyte existence (that would have quickly spiraled into expulsion had I not been pulled out of it by a wiser RA).

But what I remember was his car, his Billy Squier 8-track, and a full carton of cigarettes on the dashboard, and I thought Whoa, if I could have only this and the open road, I could be happy for the rest of my life.

There is a piece of me still that thinks that way, though I’d switch out Billy Squier for NPR.

I actually preferred Donnie Iris’s style at that point in my musical tastes:
