aging into rainy apprehension
there is a hush that falls with fog
'neath stagnant clouds
so thick with rain they sag
like bosoms
while earth strains up to suck
as a child yawning at its mother's breast.
its a cozy dull gray
that forces children inside
when once upon time they lighted oil lamps and candles
and played games of wood and paper and metal
for just a while,
while the rain fell and the sky boomed and lightening dashed off window
panes.
we enter this world aquatic things and
age into rainy apprehension.
some say we begin and end
alone,
but we don't;
we are never closer to another heart
than when we enter this world
and never closer to hearts gone on
than when we leave it behind.

I think the last two stanzas are quite good. I'm not crazy about "'neath," but adjusting to "beneath" or "below" or something like that wrought havoc with the meter and messed up subsequent lines, which I didn't want to change.
