This happened in my own backyard, in an evangelical fundamentalist school that holds the same views I was raised with.
No one will (and no one should) make a distinction between this and the atrocious scandal of priests and pedophilia.
But neither will many stop and consider that these failures characterize every segment of society.
We shouldn't become more outraged by the violation of our trust than the violation of a child, but that's how we're wired. We respond first to the violation of our sensibilities, while understanding the physical violation of someone we don't know requires empathy.
The cure to social ills starts with the pain of those suffering, not an intellectual acknowledgment of suffering. Even a torturer knows what it means to suffer.
