Can you hear me now? or, A story with no signal.

c0 Poor wireless connectionA father and son are driving together. Dad is at the wheel while Son is thumbing his way through text messages.

Dad tunes to an 80's classic rock station on the radio, but the channel fades and turns to static.

"Darn," says Dad, I really like that song.

"I don't know why you even listen to the radio, Dad, you can put all the songs you want on your phone. I got a hundred albums right here." He stopped thumbing long enough to elevate his phone, then went back to his texting. "No static with an mp3." He glanced sidelong, showing Dad the edge of a smirk.

"Used to happen to TV, too," said Dad. "Sometimes you'd get a fuzzy picture, we called that snow. Sometimes it would be so bad, you'd have to turn it off. Do something else."

"Like what?"

"Oh, read, play a board game."

"Sounds pathetic." Then the son suddenly stopped texting and said, "Hey…"

"What's wrong?" asked Dad.

"Just lost my signal. No bars."
