I'm constantly amazed (I don't know why) when morning talking heads express faux surprise a la "The Pope said what?" and then inform us there was some unexpected remark on homosexulaity or the big bang or divorce.
What can we learn from this?
That if the media really is surprised, it's utterly uninformed about basic theology, and if it's manufacturing the surprise to generate interest in the story, what else then might it be exaggerating?
What worries me is that those dressing for work or getting the kids ready for school or peering over their morning iPad think they just got the inside scoop on a gentler, kinder Jesus who suddenly agrees with them.
