Fish on Friday

c0 Album cover of The Tubes' Completion Backwards PrincipleSure is Boss
One of the bands achieving brief but danceable immortality in the 80's was The Tubes with their hit Talk to Ya Later. (I sound like Casey Kasem, don't I? What's that? You don't know who Casey Kasem is? )

But the song I liked most of theirs was Sushi Girl. We watched them perform a ribald version on David Letterman when we were in college. The camera occasionally cut away from Tubes front man Fee Waybill to Dave grimacing with half a smile like somebody had just said "tallywhacker" in his ear (I think to lessen the chance censors would come after them). It was over the top for network TV then, even late night; might still be.

c0 Christian fish symbol with ΙΧΘΥΣ insideWhere did the Christian fish symbol come from?

ΙΧΘΥΣ is transliterated Ichthys and is Greek for "fish."

"ΙΧΘΥΣ... [is an] acronym for "Ίησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός,Σωτήρ", (Iēsous Christos, Theou Yios, Sōtēr), which translates into English as "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior".

According to tradition, ancient Christians, during their persecution by the Roman Empire in the first few centuries after Christ, used the fish symbol to mark meeting places and tombs, or to distinguish friends from foes."
