Things I wish could go on forever...
  • First cup of coffee of the day (and in my smoking days, the first cigarette)
  • Standing under a hot shower on a cold morning
  • The TV shows M*A*S*H and Barney Miller
  • Childhood
  • Sunsets
  • 5:30am

Oprah’s $38,000 purse.

Anyone else besides me think that the greater travesty at the center of Oprah's flap over a racially insensitive sales person was that she wanted to look at a $38,000 purse? Story >

How can someone lose their bearings so much that they would even consider spending that much money on something they don't need?

Something fundamental is broken in a world that ignores inequity when it involves wealth and privilege.

In this case, I suspect because Oprah is so powerful, no one questioned her right to spend as much as she wants on anything she wants. Cross Oprah and you’re probably at the top of a very short list.

(And FWIW, I like Oprah. I just think spending $38,000 on a purse is obscene. I believe Oprah once had a strong moral sense that would have responded like I am now. Unfortunately, enormous wealth blinds you to disparity. You can buy everyone in your audience a new car or create good jobs for hardworking people. That doesn't justify $38,000 for a purse. That argument works great down here; doesn’t hold much water upstairs. And she knows better.)
