Use your computer for something more productive than Facebook.

Wine. Would benefit with some cool graphics like SETI.
If you're like me and run your desktops 24/7 (if you have desktops), then your computers are likely idle some of the day and could be doing something productive.

You may already know about SETI - the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. This program requires so much computational muscle, they use distributed computing to crunch the numbers. That means you loan your processor over the Internet so it can work on the SETI project when it's not doing other things (like posting to Facebook).

"There are cash awards for discovering a new Mersenne prime!"

I just learned of a project that is searching for the next Mersenne Prime. This project is called GIMPS - the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search - and and you can learn more here >

There are actually quite a few distributed computing projects. Maybe one of these will interest you: List of distributed computing projects on Wikipedia >
