And it doesn't matter, by the way, if terms like "redskin" have alternate etymologies; it's their offensiveness that's at issue. Just as "dumb" or "ugly" can be used innocently, they can also be far more harmful than traditional 4-letter words.


Words hurt.


I'm fully aware of the very good advice about not being quick to take offense, but the flipside of that is being equally cautious about giving it.

If I called you stupid, but informed you afterward that one of the meanings of stupid in Latin was "amazed," you'd have no reason to feel any less insulted. Indeed, I might say you're stupid if you accepted my explanation.
